U14 Girls head to Gaynor Cup

The North Eastern Counties are sending a representative squad to Limerick to compete in the Gaynor cup competition for the very first time. The Gaynor Cup is a Girls only competition played at U-14 and U-16 level and the U-14 competition will take place over the June bank holiday weekend in University of Limerick with 16 leagues competing.

The squad of 20 girls representing the NEC League in the 2013 Gaynor Cup are:

Nikki Dullaghan (Quay Celtic); Ava Foley (Skryne Tara); Jade Reddy (Quay Celtic); Sinead McFadden (St Ultans); Phillipa Watters (Kingscourt); Lauren Collier (Trim Celtic); Margaret Leonard (Dunboyne); Lynn Craven (Quay Celtic); Leanne Kierans (Kingscourt); Chloe McNamee (Trim Celtic); Samantha Bennet (St Ultans); Elaine Murtagh (Trim Celtic); Rebecca O’Reilly (Baileboro); Maire Kirby (Trim Celtic); Andrea O’Reilly (Baileboro); Lauren Grier (St Ultans); Katie Mulvihill (Trim Celtic); Abygail Dennis (Walshestown); Emma Connell (St Ultans); Kayleigh Cooper (Walshestown).

The squad has been drawn in Group D of the competition. The other three squads in Group D are Inishowen League, Mayo Schoolboy/Girls League and Waterford Women’s District Soccer League.

It has been a very positive first year of girls representative football for the NEC and the preparation began back in October when trials started, since then the coaches Fran Tyrrell and Vinny Moore have been fine tuning the girls in order to have them ready for the competition.

In preparation for the Gaynor Cup the squad have had five friendlies recently; the first was against the Metropolitan Girls League which was followed by games against Ratoath Harps and East Meath United (who also play in the MGL) and then a game against the NEC Boys U-13 representative team. The last game in preparation for the Gaynor Cup was on Friday against the Midlands League Gaynor Cup Team.  The girls played really well in each of these matches and the progression from last October to now has been very pleasing for the coaching staff.

Next season the NEC Emerging Talent Programme hopes to also run an U-16 representative team and continue to build on the great work being done by the clubs in this area in relation to girls football.
